A Protein That Destroys HIV Has Been Discovered

Loyola University researchers have identified the key components of a protein called TRIM5a that destroys HIV in rhesus monkeys. The finding could lead to new TRIM5a-based treatments that would knock out HIV in humans, said senior researcher Edward M. Campbell, PhD, of Loyola University Health System. Campbell and colleagues report their findings in an article featured on the cover of the Sept. 15, 2010 issue of the journal Virology, now available online. In 2004, other researchers reported that TRIM5a protects rhesus monkeys from HIV. The TRIM5a protein first latches on to a HIV virus, then other TRIM5a proteins gang up and destroy the virus. Humans also have TRIM5a, but while the human version of TRIM5a protects against some viruses, it does not protect against HIV.

Dimitar Sasselov: How we found hundreds of Earth-like planets

Astronomer Dimitar Sasselov and his colleagues search for Earth-like planets that may, someday, help us answer centuries-old questions about the origin and existence of biological life elsewhere (and on Earth). How many such planets have they found already? Several hundreds.

Dimitar Sasselov works on uniting the physical and life sciences in the hunt for answers to the question of how life began. Full bio and more links

This Bendable Bike Can Tie Itself to a Lamp Post

I am slowly customizing my new bike with the help of some friends from Ohio. I love it except for one thing: The massive lock that I have to use in NYC. This awesome bendable bike, however, does not need any lock.

This has to be one of the best bike inventions in the history of bike inventions. It was created by the guy in the photos, 21-yo designer—and Adam Frucci impersonator—Kevin Scott.

I know it is hard to believe, but this thing actually works and could go into production. The bike can literally bend around a lamp post. Again: The whole bike bends to lock onto itself. First, it is rigid. Then, you push a lever and it is flexible enough to tie it to a post. Rigid. Lever. Bendable. Lever. Rigid. Lever. Bendable. I am sorry, but I just can not stop marveling at this invention. [DMU via Daily Mail]

OLED Wallpaper – aka Digital Paper

A Welsh company named LOMOX Ltd. has been working on creating OLED Wallpaper that could very well eliminate standard lighting. LOMOX Ltd’’s organic light emitting diode technology (OLED), will be able to provide lighting solutions to homes, businesses and even roadways. The light is provided by chemicals that are applied on a surface to which are capable of emitting a natural looking light and only require between three to five volts to run, making it more then twice as efficient than current energy saving light bulbs.

””This is a chemical that in a flat panel display screen you can put it in the device and it emits light. You can put it anywhere, even paint it on a wall or wallpaper.””
-Ken Lacey, Chief Executive of LOMOX Ltd

Due to its flexibility, OLED’’s have potential for numerous applications; televisions, computers, mobile phones, walls and even road signs. This ground breaking technology could also be used to make flexible screens that could be rolled up after use, and would also provide an effective alternative to outside lighting with traditional lights. Another benefit is that all of these applications can also be powered by greener alternatives such as solar energy. LOMOX Ltd. hopes to roll out the first applications for outdoor signage and displays as early as 2012.
