I was sent this track a week ago by Brad of Field Day Recordings and I haven’t stopped listening to it since.

With the majority of independent music being released out of Cleveland being mostly Hardcore bands, Rap, and Bro-Step, FREEZE-TAG and his melodic/ambient  up-tempo tracks are a breath of fresh air in the local music scene.

This Thursday, TheCoventryKids.com will be hosting their third installment of #TACONIGHT at the B-Side. This week also falls upon the one-year anniversary of The Coventry Kids’ being an official write-it-on-your-resume-because-this-is-for-real business. To celebrate the end of the summer, the anniversary, and for the love of tacos, we have made sure that this #TACONIGHT is going to be especially special!

#TACONIGHT is located at 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd. in Cleveland Heights, OH. The party starts at 9p.m., and if you want to indulge in some free tacos, it would be wise to arrive on time! I recently got a chance to interview Brooklyn based neo soul trip hop band Das Racist. For those who still dont know, their sound is like a Marcus Garvey biopic directed by D.W. Griffith. They already released two videos, a flash video game, and now a full length mixtape , all in the last two weeks.

First question, Im curious what your background/obsession with food is considering the amount of content on the mixtape related to it.

KOOL A.D.: I talked a little, or kind of a lot, about this in this

in yeah I mean everybody eats food every day (or at least 87% of the world
does and the other 13% would like to) but not everybody eats the same food,
and the cultural/aesthetic/social differences in food consumption are
interesting and arguably no less significant than other
cultural/aesthetic/social differences (art, clothing, music).  But in the
same way you can say “the people in this region tend to eat this kind of
meat with these kinds of spices, etc.” you can also say “at Taco Bell, you
can order this type of “meat” with these kinds of “spices.” In a sense,
fast food corporations (food corporations in general) are like global
non-geographically-centralized “nations” peddling their national cuisine.
The difference between these nations and “real” nations is that the history
of the Nation of Taco Bell is not as rich as say, the history of the nation
of Mexico, and the food reflects that.  Mexicos food reflects its climate,
its resources, the various culinary practices of its
indigenous, European and African peoples, whereas Taco Bells food reflects
one white mans love of tacos and also his, and a bunch of other (probably
mostly white) mens love of money. This makes for a food that only resembles
food enough to pass as food, only satisfies on the most base surface level,
with no regard to healthily integrating into human life.  Which isnt to say
it isnt tasty and addicitive, its to say that its *only* tasty and
addictive and thats all it ever was designed to be, at the cost of being
actually good.  But I mean, that said, we just occasionally rap about food
we eat or food that just happens to rhyme with other shit were rapping
about.

Dap: This is the first time Ive been alone in a room for 6 days. Prior to
writing this, I ate reheated kakarakaya
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_melon) and tomato chutney (with rice).
I ate it (alone, also) while watching Seinfeld (“The Summer of
George”) followed by an old episode of “American Justice” about two
kidnappings. Seinfeld is chock full of some “pretty tasty” racist
caricatures. ”And thats all I have to say about that,” said Forrest Gump

Himanshu: Everything is and always has been all about food. On a
personal level one way I could talk about its importance is as simple
as my eating one kind of food at home where I spoke one language and
lived one culture and eating another kind at school where I spoke a
different language and lived a different culture. Also perhaps, how
certain types of fancy cheeses and my inexperience with them
especially make me feel like “the other” at certain types of parties.
In a larger sense, I could talk about how the British turned drought
into famine in India by growing opium instead of wheat so they could
exert more power over China while thousands and thousands of innocent
people starved to death. Or how Coca-Cola uses up water in certain
villages where access to clean water is scarce. Or how America was
discovered because you wanted my spices.

We all know you first met while Vic was Heems RA, but did Vic ever have to bust Heems?  Did you guys get into any trouble at Wesleyan?

KOOL A.D.: Hima did plenty of shit I couldve “busted” him for. I did a
lot that shit with him actually. I lost my R.A. job and got suspended that
year.

Dap: Most of the kids I saw at Wesleyan when I would visit did “whatever
they wanted” for the most part. Just saying!

Hima: I did whatever I wanted and I still do.

I know youre releasing two music videos this month from the old tape, do you already have plans for a first single/video for SIT DOWN MAN?
KOOL A.D.: Not really.

Dap: Not what many Korean-Americans refer to as “actual plans,” no.

Hima: Sure. Why not!?

Did you guys see the pic 50 cent released of himself with his face photoshopped over Hitlers? Who would you photoshop your faces over in a desperate publicity stunt once your careers arent so hot?
KOOL A.D.: 50 Cent.

Dap: I heard about it from our friend and featured rapper from “Sit Down,
Man” Lakutis aka Aleksey Weintraub. Im guessing it was some allusion to how
50 “runs shit” a la Hitler running Nazi Germany? I wouldnt do it!

Hima: I asked Ashok to photoshop my face on Kadeem Hardisons body on
the cover of the A Different World DVD

Finally, racism is coming back in a major way. Its whats hot in the streets right now, especially in New York. Are you guys excited about this?

KOOL A.D.: Dont call it a comeback. Its been here for years.

Dap: Racism is bad, guys!

Hima: The only benefit of this, as Dap pointed out recently, is that
now maybe white people will have a hard time getting cabs instead of
people of color. Although really, who am I kidding, not only do I
easily catch cabs but I get them to not rip me off, burn bogies, and
bump Hot 97 by speaking a little Punjabi or Hindi.
