I was sent this track a week ago by Brad of Field Day Recordings and I haven’t stopped listening to it since.

With the majority of independent music being released out of Cleveland being mostly Hardcore bands, Rap, and Bro-Step, FREEZE-TAG and his melodic/ambient up-tempo tracks are a breath of fresh air in the local music scene.

Boom! It’s the beginning of a new month and we’re breaking you off with an exclusive look at a SOLD OUT Doctor P & Flux Pavilion show we got invited to attend. For some reason the rave culture never surprises me, I can always expect to see a million people on drugs sweating on each other. But, that type of behavior is exactly what you want at a rave. This show was so massive people were crowd surfing. So, to really understand the extent of the chaos at this show, check out the recap we broke you off with. #TACONIGHT – The Coventry Kids’ Anniversary Edition

This Thursday, TheCoventryKids.com will be hosting their third installment of #TACONIGHT at the B-Side. This week also falls upon the one-year anniversary of The Coventry Kids’ being an official write-it-on-your-resume-because-this-is-for-real business. To celebrate the end of the summer, the anniversary, and for the love of tacos, we have made sure that this #TACONIGHT is going to be especially special!

#TACONIGHT is located at 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd. in Cleveland Heights, OH. The party starts at 9p.m., and if you want to indulge in some free tacos, it would be wise to arrive on time! We will be having an open taco buffet cooked by Chef Chaz Rice. Be sure to get your hands on the free margaritas-in-a-can from 9 to 11. Shots of Patron and Hornitos will be on discount all night long! At midnight, we will be busting the pinata, which is filled with surprise coupons, gift cards, toys, and candy from local Coventry businesses. In the past, the pinata has featured Crazy Mullets, Big Fun, Phoenix Coffee, Eddy’s, and many more of your favorite places to be!

ARTSHOW @ Doubting Thomas Gallery 7/30/11

On July 30th, The Coventry Kids first ARTSHOW took place at the Doubting Thomas Gallery, located at 856 Jefferson Ave. in Tremont.

The gallery was an open invitation to local Cleveland artists and musicians to present their work at an exciting local event.

Cleveland Heights music group KEYEL presented a demonstrative beat set, followed by a DJ set by Tech Wizard, and a musical performance by two-man band Trade School.

ARAABMUZIK @ GROG SHOP 7/24/11

Dipset was definitely in the building at the Grog Shop on the night of July 24th. The MVP of the MPC, Araab Muzik, killed a set in which he showcased his eclectic influences in the form of beats spanning all genres. From using heavy metal guitar samples to orchestral samples, right on down to dabbling in the murky realm of dubstep, it was a captivating display of chaotic rhythms. I was at times out of breath myself standing completely still watching his hands move at breakneck speed. Much love was shown from the crowd of diverse faces and it brought great joy to my heart to have a reason to obnoxiously yell ‘DIPSET!’ repeatedly all night. Don’t take my word for it though, go watch the video.

Mexicans With Guns Interview @ Creme De La Creme: Cleveland 5/27/11

About 3 months ago, I was looking for new music so I took a look at Stone Throw’s website. It was only right, considering that Stones Throw is one of my favorite labels. While looking through the Stones Throw store, I stumbled upon a link that read Mexicans With Guns. I thought to myself, “That sounds DOPE.” Amused by the name, I clicked the link. There wasn’t really shit on the page so I was confused. I don’t like being confused, so I took my issue up with YouTube. The first song I listened to by Mexicans With Guns, a.k.a. Ernest Gonzales, was “Icaros”. As it started playing, I started to get excited (not in a horny way). I thought to myself, “I usually don’t like dubstep, but this is different.” It was definitely something that I had never heard before, but yet, it sounded so familiar. The song was filled with so many emotions. I was happy in a sad way, but peaceful as if I just took an 8th of mushrooms. It felt as if I was in a video game slashing Latin monsters because they were trying to take over my futuristic spacecraft. As the song progressed, I became more and more impressed. You know that girl you went to elementary school with who was kind of nerdy, but through the years she kept looking better and better while her friends stayed the same and by senior year she was the baddest? The song developed like that. After listening to Icaros, I was ready to buy one of his tracks.

Note: I hardly ever buy new music anymore. I only buy music if I am in some way moved by it and want to support the artist.

The first thing that popped up when I searched for his music was beenmeaningtotellyou.com. I started to preview the songs, and I was blown away. I proceeded to purchase “Been Meaning to Tell You” on vinyl. Each track has incredible replay value. It contains everything from beat boxing and bells chiming to psychedelic and Nintendo sounds. About a month later, I heard that Mexicans With Guns was planning on coming to the HOB in Cleveland and one of my boys was going to open for him. Long story short, I got to kick it with him. He was one of the coolest, laid back, most down to earth artists I’ve ever met. Before the show, The Coventry Kids were about to interview him, but they needed someone to ask questions. I happily accepted the offer. I had a great time with the interview. The concert was a great experience. MWG wore a Luchador mask, and used classic software during the performance, specifically Reason 2. I also got to take him to the airport the next day. It felt good to meet someone who I admire. It felt even better that he was a humble and real guy. Who would’ve thought that when he’s not making music, he’s teaching kids in a middle school? Anyway, I’ll close this with what I said earlier. Remember the ugly girl? It’s like that, but Ernest Gonzales isn’t a girl; he’s an artist. While the majority is staying the same, he’s stepping out of the boundaries and leaving his unique mark behind.

We here at The Cov Kids compound have been hitting the beach, biking, going ham at the club, kicking it with cuties, loud packs and molly, have kept us lamped up thus far. July is almost over which means you should be recovering from your last adventure and gear up for the next month of festivals.

Lollapalooza – Aug. 5th – Chicago, IL

This bitch has almost sold out most of their presale tickets. Grab your day tickets here…BEFORE THEY ARE GONE. So, with that being said you know this historical chicago festival will be amazing. The festival spans over 115 acres, includes multiple stages, with a diverse array of 130+ artists from hip-hop, electronica, reggae, indie, rock, modern roots, and many more. Lollapalooza encourages festival fans to park their bicycle, hit the farmers market, grab some gourmet grub, peruse handmade arts and crafts, get rewarded for recycling and – of course – rock out to some of the best music in the world.

HARD Summer 2011 – Aug. 6th – Los Angeles State Historic Park Los Angeles, CA

Get ready for an intense day in the park. By that I mean, be ready to jump around and sweat with 10,0000+ stranger. Tickets are moving fast for this day fest. Grab em here before your chance is gone. The headliners for this year’s event, which will again take place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles, include Duck Sauce (the dynamic duo of Armand van Helden and A-Trak responsible for the wonderfully silly “Barbra Streisand”), German fuzz-tech producers Boys Noize, dueling-guitar instrumentalists Ratatat, hip-hop collective Odd Future, Digitalism, Busy Pictionary (Busy P of Ed Banger and artist/producer So-Me), Gaslamp Killer, Acid Jacks and Karlsson & Winnberg of Miike Snow and others. As well, an entire tent will be turned over to James Murphy, formerly of LCD Soundsystem and his DJ partner, Pat Mahoney.

WEMF – Aug. 12th – Ontario, Canada

Tickets are still widely available…get ready for Canada’s World Electronic Music Festival on Aug 12-14, 2011. While the name remains the same, almost everything else has be updated, upgraded and sophisticated. Expect bigger and better talent from even more electronic genres, a much bigger emphasis on art and culture and greater community involvement. Introducing the “Tower of Destiny”. A highlight at last year’s Burning Man. The same people/projectors/vjs/stage will be used at WEMF 2011. For those that have never experienced this before, prepare to be blown away by the visuals of VJ INFINIGHT. As more artists are attempting to connect with their audiences in new ways, he started his odyssey into the visual world after looking to create a visual outlet to match his music. With ten years of DJ Experience under his belt, he is leading the AudioVisual revolution with his shows that have been captivating the attention of audiences all across the country. A VJ/DJ/Production Designer and producer; INFINIGHT’s shows incorporate local images, pop icons, and his own content and animation to create a show completely unique to each venue and location.When not on tour as the VJ for The Crystal Method, you can catch Infinight showcasing his work at festivals such as Burning Man and Coachella and Ultra Music Festival.

Pukkelpop – Aug. 18th – Hasselt, 123, Belgium

Each year Pukkelpop attracts thousands of vistors from Flanders and far beyond to the Kiewit site near Hasselt. Today Pukkelpop has become one of the biggest alternative open-air festivals in Belgium. This event is a unique and encompassing experience during which the music, in combination with the side events, forges an intense bond among the open-minded Pukkelpop audience. Pukkelpop prides itself on its progressive music programme, with its idiosyncratic blend of unforgettable top acts and surprising new talent. Each year in August about 200 acts play on one of the eight Pukkelpop stages during the three-day festival (from Thursday to Saturday). The campsite is opened on Wednesday, the day before the festival. Local party DJs provide an eclectic warm-up for this three-day feast for music lovers. Grab your tickets here.

Creamfields – Aug. 27th – Liverpool, United Kingdom

One of the world’s pre-eminent electronic music festivals, Creamfields has a history of names like Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Gorillaz, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Underworld, Outkast, Sasha, Jeff Mills and Paul Oakenfold. For the past few months, The Coventry Kids have been hosting a weekly #TacoNight in our two-story home in Cleveland Heights. Beginning as a social gathering for our immediate friends and family, #TacoNight evolved into a regular gathering of the Cleveland Heights 20-something year old community. Through social networking, specifically Twitter, #Taconight became a weekly trending topic among our extended group of friends. #Taconight had grown to a weekly attendance of 150 plus people, and we couldn’t fit them all in the house anymore, so we decided to bring it to the next level.

Summer is right around the corner. Which means, it’s time to get ready for festival season. Here is a list of the major events happening around the world during the month of June. Remember always wear sun screen, never forget your towel, and always bring enough to share. Be safe and celebrate summer the correct way!

Mutek Festival 2011 June 1 – 5 Montreal, Canada

The Mutek Festival puts Montreal on the Techno map. It features minimal techno artists from all over the world in a 5 day festival of beats and workshops. They’ve got about 40 performers and panels, workshops, and events at a variety of locations, all set to start on Wednesday and continue through Sunday. In 2009, Mutek launched DIGI_SECTION, a series of discussion sessions, panels, and workshops centered around artists, technology and media. They’ve just announced the DIGI_SECTION lineup for the 2011 show, which includes “Live Exchanges” with Amon Tobin, Emptyset, Akufen, Horror Inc, Sutekh and Traversable Wormhole. The Live Exchange is a one-on-one conversation with leading electronic musicians and Resident Advisor Editor-in-Chief Todd Burns. Get Tickets Here

Bonnaroo Festival 2011 June 9 – 12 Manchester, Tennessee, USA

In a few short years, Bonnaroo has quickly become one the US’s biggest and best festivals. Set on a 700 acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, it’s the playground of the cool kids and the hippies, at the same time, on the same field. It played home to one of the few Radiohead U.S. gigs in 2006.

Bonnaroo organizers ‘bought the farm’ in 2007. A statement on the Bonnaroo web site said “As you may have heard, we have purchased a major portion of the beautiful farm where Bonnaroo takes place each year. We are very excited about the opportunity it will provide us to improve the festival for years to come. We now have a permanent home in Manchester and look forward to seeing you there every year during Bonnaroo time!” The land is in Manchester in Coffee County, Tennessee. SOLD OUT!

Isle of Wight Festival 2011 June 10 – 12 Seaclose Park, Newport, UK

Starting out in the late 60′s as a british catalyst to the new music scene, the Isle of Wight Festival quickly grew in 1969 when they landed Bob Dylan as a headliner. Big names like Joe Cocker, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix followed. By 1970, the festival brought in over half a million people and was widely regarded as the British Woodstock, which was great, but the festival was a little out of control in terms of drugs and fighting. So much so that the British Parliament passed the Isle of Wight Act in 1970 banning all of festivals on that Island. The festival eventually made a comeback in 2002. The 2011 Isle of Wight has named its headliners: Kings of Leon, Pulp, Foo Fighters and Kasabian. More acts will be added to the lineup at a later time. Get Tickets Here

RockNess Festival 2011 Dores, Scotland June 10 – 12

Renowned as being one of the most beautiful festival sites in the world, situated on an incredible backdrop of the loch, RockNess is quick becoming ‘The’ Festival to be at in 2011, that hidden gem in the festival calendar that is not to be missed! It takes place from the 10th -12th June, 2011 in the village of Dores, close to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands and with an undisputed atmosphere found nowhere else, it is set to be the festival of the year! Sónar Festival 2011 June 16 – 18 Barcelona, Spain, Europe

Sónar is Spain’s mashup of music and film and video, all rolled into one big multimedia festival. The dates for the 2011 Sónar are June 16 – 18, in Barcelona, Spain. There’s a focus on Spanish acts this year, including Astrud, Downliners Sekt, Xesús Valle, the Barcelona Laptop Orchestra, Edredón, Shelby Grey, El Timbe, Chelis and Judah. You get installation art, audio visual concerts, and medialab presentations next to DJ sets, electonic music, film and more. It’s the new media jet set in the heart of Europe. Get Tickets Here

Movement 2011 // MAY 28-30th

This festival looks very promising. Movement (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) has become the ultimate stage for the city that founded techno music to showcase its electronic music muscle. Starting at Noon on Saturday, May 28th Techno heads, House heads and electronic dance music enthusiasts from across the globe will pour through the turnstiles at Detroit’s Hart Plaza for the start of Movement 2011. And for the next three days and nights they will have a chance to experience the ultimate outdoor electronic music venue. 36 hours of music; 4 stages and more than 70 electronic music artists and DJs. Last year’s attendance nearly reached 90,000 over the three days of the festival.

February 9th, 2011 we linked up with Dubfrequency.com to bring the Creme De La Creme tour to Cleveland, OH. Special thanks to Sir Mikey Rocks, Chip the Ripper, DJ – EV, Bravo & Cornelious Jackson for rocking the crowd. Shout out to Antenna Magazine and House Of Blues for hosting the event. Next time the tour comes through we’re gonna have to get a bigger venue because we hit capacity and had to turn away a bunch of people. What a success!

Since signing with Deadmau5′s label Mau5trap, Skrillex has become known as one of America’s premier DJs of dubstep, electro-house, and hardcore. His carefully balanced sound incorporates both melodic overtones and sweeping soundscapes with heavy heart crunching bass lines that can literally stop ones breath. Shortly after the release of his EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, Skrillex for a short time held 8 spots on Beatport’s top 10 most downloaded dubstep list.

PHOTOS : Last Place Vault Sale at H&S

Earlier this year, Last Place held an event at Heart and Sole to mark the end of their first run. They cleared out their inventory with some low-low priced deals, and have pulled anything that didnt make the final sale. 2011: A Dub Odyssey feat. 12th Planet [RECAP + PHOTOS]

Well friends… This past Friday has truly been EPIC. It’s no secret that Ohio is filled with freaks, and 2011: A Dub Odyssey was a true testament to the popular maxim – THE FREAKS COME OUT AT NIGHT!!

Ohio promoters Next Era Entertainment, My Best Friend’s Party, Run614, & Ohio Stand Up have come together for the first time to present the first major Columbus dubstep event of 2011. Things started off easy with supporting acts including Thunder St. Clair, Attak & Carma, Trip Turlington & Mister Shifter, Cornelius Jackson, Real Talk, Freewater, and Bit Flip. Those that showed up early wandered through the extensive maze of colorfully painted rooms that makes up Columbus’ newest premier electro venue, Mansion.

As the crowd started to thicken, the real heavy hitters stormed the stage. Columbus DJ crew Hot Mess (Keith Swet and Vacate) ripped through a bone crushing set which included both original tunes and borrowed bangers. Accompanied by friends and fellow artists the likes of Digiraatii and Johnny Flavor, Hot Mess was in their element and truly presented a hometown horror-show of a performance. Ears did bleed…

While Hot Mess wrapped up, tension loomed as 12th Planet stepped to the stage. A student of physics might describe the atmosphere on the dance floor as a state of static energy. The crowd waited wide-eyed for the first flutter of fresh funk to be dropped as if it would be a gift from the heavens. We were all in for a rude awakening. The sounds that plagued our minds and penetrated our ears for the remainder of the evening (including a few super exclusive unreleased Circus Records cuts) must be described as out of this world. The Earth Goddess herself could not have procured such excellent filth. By the end of his two hour long set, 12th Planet’s cosmic collection of sinister cuts left listeners ecstatic.

Thanks to Mansion, 12th Planet, Hot Mess, all supporting acts and especially the promoters for all the hard work that went into this show. This has truly been a Dub Odyssey!

Next Tuesday at the Grog Shop, 2010 XXL Freshmen Freddie Gibbs makes his Cleveland debut. Making XXls list has kept Gibbs in high demand, even landing him a spot on Mad Decent Block Party Chicago. LeBoom – Roevy and Digiraatii at Skullys 1/15

This Saturday is LeBoom at Skullys on HIgh in Columbus!!! The last time these two super groups teamed up at this venue over 600 people came out to thrash their fucking faces off. Considering that was during Summer Break, Im projecting this event will go HAM and potentially sell out so come down early.

Another year is gone which means everybody and their momma wanted to get fucked up this past Friday for NYE. Foolishly, a few months back the Grog Shop asked us if we wanted to host an event that night, not knowing how absolutely based and extraordinarily rare their respected little venue would become. The party started early with Nathan Sloan and M-Law getting the floor packed almost as soon as we opened the doors. For the responsible adults in attendance, we handed out drink tickets, redeemable for either Jameson or Grey Goose starting at 11pm. As the countdown to midnight drew nearer, and Clevelands favorite thugstep/bootyjuke/stripper-anthem spinning dj, Twerkle took the stage, the shots continued to flow. Trays of champagne toasts were circulated through the crowd, as if some rare sign of classy NYE party etiquette had mistakenly stumbled across our basedfest 2011. After a lot of making out, and some spilled champagne, our Columbus faction took full domination of the dance floor. Real Talk and Dirty Current delivered banger after banger until the stage was overrun and past the point of crowd control. Anyone left standing was treated to the local tunrtablist skills of our mans Wabberjockey until ultimately the lights came on and it was time to scurry off to any number of multiple house parties.
