Lampin Tuesdays Present : Natalie Portmans Strange Box : A Black Swan Review

So without giving too much (or anything) away, I wanted to give those not in the know a chance to understand why Ive been nonstop talking about this movie for the past 72 hours. I had a chance to finally see the film on Christmas, and since then my twitter, and even my actual social life have been completely overcome by it.

If you havent heard or know little about Black Swan – GOOD! DONT SEE THE TRAILER, DONT ASK WHAT ITS ABOUT, JUST GO SEE IT. I hadnt heard or seen anything about it til a day or so after it came out and was pleasantly floored by what I saw. I walked in expecting to be let down by the hype and overwhelming number of positive reviews. From the second Black Swan begins, it just goes. Keeping your attention and your eyes glued to the screen for every frame. Until ultimately it just….. stops, and the ending credits roll. I walked out disillusioned and feeling unsure of what I had just seen, but I loved the feeling.

What I like most about the movie was Natalie Portman herself. Her acting was phenomenal, every single emotion she attempted (which runs the gamut in this story) she nailed. I almost cried, came in my pants, and threw up from discuss several times during my first screening. Her body is presented as both an object of incredible beauty and of physical pain and manipulation. I was astonished by the forms and movements her body was able to create, some of which I never knew was possible for a human being.

Everything else about this movie was also good but you should discover it for yourself. This is more than a film, it truly is an experience. An instant classic, and quite possibly one of our generations definitive contribution to the arts. Dont be a sucker, check this shit out.

*********The Cedar Lee Theater does a $5 Mondays. I hope all my heights people will support the local arts instead of the Big Cinemas************

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN IT
On a similar note, I was pleased to realize many of the same themes from Kanyes Runaway and earlier short film We Were Once A Fairytale (A Spike Jonze Joint) were also in Black Swan as well. Themes such as:

Ballerinas
women as birds
the female form as art
art being consumed/judged and the affect it takes on the artist
the extremes and pressures of being a performer
manipulation and control
an ugliness within ones self and the removal of it (specifically located around your stomach)
life/death
